Murdoch University MIT

Project

The project included the removal and upgrade of an existing HV substation, sub-mains to a new two storey building and the electrical installation for a ‘lease build’ with internal fit out by others.

Overview

The existing high voltage substation needed to be upgraded so the works included the removal of 2x500KVA, 22 kilovolt transformers and replacing them with a new 1x1000KVA transformer. Also, the removal and replacement of the HV switchgear required extending and re-terminating the existing HV cabling.

A new distribution board was also fitted to provide power throughout the campus and feed the new MIT building. The sub-main and conduct reticulation was a delicate excavation and took place through existing ‘cable easements’ to ensure no other underground services were hit. Various shutdowns were scheduled to carry out the changeover and liven up the new equipment.

The new two storey building will need general light, power and communication cabling installed and at a later date, an internal fitout will be undertaken by the client.

Timeline

As the flagship building for the campus, particular attention was required to avoid disruption to the existing infrastructure and students. Despite being at the centre of the campus and subject to restrictions regarding noise and access, the entire project was completed within seven months.
